The true essence of these experiences often remains a mystery until you find yourself immersed in them. From August 4th to 6th, 2023, against the picturesque backdrop of Böllerbauer in Austria, the legendary GRIASDI festival unfolded.

Let’s embark on a journey from the very beginning.

What constitutes a festival? Essentially, it’s a place of joy, where you come to revel in performances, see your friends, and simply have a good time. A handpan festival, however, is a special gathering for those who hold an affinity for the handpan. Whether you’re a player or an admirer of its unique melodies, you’re welcomed with open arms.

But what exactly is GRIASDI? It’s a question that can only be answered in the moment, for GRIASDI carries a distinct aura that defies easy definition. Personally, I’ve had the privilege of attending GRIASDI twice before, though not this year. What left a lasting impression was the sheer embrace of nature that enveloped the venue—lush green grass, rustic farm-style structures, and majestic trees. It was a time to connect with both the natural world and one’s inner self.

Equally compelling is the sense of community. Stepping into GRIASDI feels like being enveloped by the warmth of soulmates, friends, and kindred spirits. The festival’s ambiance seems to partition the world into two realms: the realm within GRIASDI and the realm beyond. I recall the inclement weather during the first two days, an unlikely catalyst that drew us all closer together. Strangely enough, adversity seemed to amplify our sense of camaraderie. It’s remarkable how comfort zones expand amidst shared challenges.

As the clouds gave way to sunshine, a wave of merriment, music, conversations, and laughter washed over us. The days were brimming with classes, concerts, performances, a bustling marketplace featuring handpans, and a vibrant art scene. Upon departing, I felt invigorated, fueled by a newfound wellspring of inspiration. GRIASDI, to me, is a source of creative vitality—something that could easily kindle the same flame within you.

This year’s GRIASDI was no exception to its legacy of wonder and significance. While the format evolves slightly from year to year, the underlying essence remains steadfast. Martin Zoepfl, the visionary behind this enchanting gathering, stands as a testament to human dedication. An extraordinary individual with a kind heart and captivating soul, he orchestrates the magic that is GRIASDI.

During an insightful conversation with some dear friends, we delved into their perspectives on GRIASDI:

Caroline: “The weather conditions during the event were rainy and muddy. Despite the challenges, they managed to move the stage and sound equipment to a shaded area due to the strong winds. However, the overall atmosphere felt really interesting and intimate. People sought shelter and that brought us all closer. It’s amazing how the weather can create connections. Although we did encounter some issues it felt special.”

Malvina: “Due to the weather, people came closer to each other, which was so heartwarming. People kept up their positivity and helped each other. I took away it’s always worth to keep my focus on the good side. And I loved being part of a bunch of people cuddling together, even two times, I’ll be looking for more such opportunities. Non-intentional cuddling is wonderful. And of course, there are so many good-looking guys. 😁”

Gordon: “I got to be sure that the handpan community is growing up and constantly maintaining a lovely, open, and warm mindset for all humans. It was amazing to see children, men, and women from all over the world, speaking different languages. Yes, amazing! The concerts, meeting people personally, I only knew about on Facebook! Now, I have a lot of new friends and new dates for meetings!”
